Youth in Revolt – C D Payne.
Youth in Revolt is the first in a series of books about Nick Twisp a 14 year old diarist who on the advice of his love interest Sheeni Saunders decides to become a rebel by creating an alter ego called Francois Dillinger.
The book is full of entries of six months of Nick’s life in which he deals with his mother’s new boyfriend, his absent father and his desire to meet a girl who doesn’t find him repulsive. After meeting said girl (the very pretentious Sheeni) he ends up becoming a teenager on the run from the FBI after committing arson, theft, vandalism, almost killing a school girl and getting two peers expelled from school.
Like the first book on my list, I have also seen the film adaptation of this book and I have to admit that I am very glad that the film was changed from the original material. There are certain things I really don’t need to see in a teen comedy, Nick being molested by his house keepers son being one, I’m also glad that they changed the ages of the characters in the film to 16. Whilst reading the book I was really shocked to see just how much sex was in it, especially considering they are all 14. When I was 14 my mind was filled with whether Harry Potter was going to escape Voldemort and whether I could get away with skipping PE that week. Maybe that’s because I’m not a boy but I’m not sure!
I did enjoy the book and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in teen fiction, its very funny and Nick’s pain is very relatable at times.
I also have to say that my copy of this book is HUGE. And I mean huge, it’s really thick and really tall, it looks more like a reference book than a novel of any kind. It gave me quite a work out lugging that about on the tube! But, anyway, my work placement is going amazingly! I really love working here and I hope that one day I can do on a more permanent basis!! I put links to loads of the articles I was writing on my tumblr, so feel free to check them out if you want to!
Roll on book three!
