Shadowhunters and Downworlders – various authors, edited by Cassandra Clare.
RELEASED: 17th January.
I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m a huge fan of The Mortal Instruments series (and by extension, The Infernal Devices), in fact, if it’s got shadowhunters in it, I’m going to enjoy it, which is why I was so excited to receive an ARC for this through NetGalley.
Shadowhunters and Downworlders is the perfect companion piece for Cassandra Clare’s titles, edited by Clare herself and featuring the opinions and words from many of her contemporaries (including Sarah Rees Brennen and Sara Ryan), this is a great collection of takes on her world.
As well as being a fascinating look at how an author would go about creating a world as vivid and historic as Clare’s there is also plenty of background information on the myths and folklore that inspired it which was great, especially if, like me, you’re a massive nerd when it comes to this sort of thing. It features a whole host of character studies and essays which are equally as interesting. Being a huge fan of the character Simon, I loved the section: “Simon Lewis: Jewish, vampire, hero” particularly.
The entire time I was reading this was like having one huge literary boner, and I thoroughly recommend it to fans of the series, particularly if you have no one else to flail with about it, because lets face it, each and every one of those essays features an argument you have had with yourself about this world.
Shadowhunters and Downworlders is released on January 17th.
